The look on his face told him that he should have woken her. He bit his lip and shrugged. “Maybe I should have woken you up.” He didn't think she'd want to be there, with everyone else who was there, so he hadn't. He knew that, as soon as she was awake, she'd come. On her time. Not anyone else's. But maybe he'd been wrong; maybe he should've woken her. Either way... it was too late to take it back now.
He looked over his shoulder at the door to the room and nodded his head. “Now they're not so sure if he was early, or if they had the date of conception wrong. He looks... far too big to be a preemie. He's healthy.” Evan couldn't help but smile a little at that. Everything that little baby had been through, and he was perfectly healthy. Resilient little boy already, and he was only a few hours old.
At the question about Rae, Evan shrugged. “A lot of things.” And that was the truth. “Happy, but sad. Right now, she's really tired. Finally trying to get some sleep. It was a long night.” He looked up at her. They had so much more to talk about, but...it was easier to talk about other things. Disappointing, but true.
At her question, he nodded and looked at his hands. “Yeah. Felt like where I belonged. Elliot asked me to be the godfather, so...” he shrugged and smiled weakly. “It was a little strange, though. They're all family. Her, Ellie, Luke and David. Silas was around for a little while, too, but he left. And then it was just me and them.” They were his friends, but they were each other's family.
“She's not mad,” Evan told her sincerely. “She understands. She actually wanted me to ask you something. She hadn't chosen a godmother, but she wanted me to ask you if you were interested.”
