Doomed. Sure, Zach had been joking, but they very well might have been, Everett thought. He felt less so than he had in years, honestly. Finding his sister had made all the difference in the world, and right now, working out in an actual gym, of all places, this could have been a normal day in the distant past. He knew they couldn't afford to get complacent, but all the more reason to be doing this. Staying in shape, well-honed, ready for whatever might come next.
When Zach asked if Caitie knew about his plans, Everett made a wry face, continuing to lift the weights toward the ceiling. "No. She doesn't have any idea. Yet." He paused, racking the weights to take a brief break and turning his head in Zach's direction. He didn't really mind the questions. Ev had never been the sort to be cagey or to feel that he had to keep everything to himself. He was an open book, for the most part. "She won't like it," he added, "but I can't stop looking for our sister. Like I wouldn't have stopped looking for Caitie if it was Chris I'd found first."
