“No problem,” he responded, then decided that keeping his mouth shut seemed to be the best thing to do while Rae had a talk with the kids. He didn’t really know what to say to kids anyways; he didn’t mind them, but sometimes they just didn’t make any sense to him. He blamed it on being an only child and the youngest of all his cousins.
“Adults on a bender are worse,” he pointed out unruffled. “Least none of the kids are throwing up in corners,” he paused and looked around the room, “Or not yet, I guess.”
He couldn’t help a smile at the way Rae had addressed him; couldn’t help the laugh either. At least the adults were getting the costume, even if the kids weren’t. He would have felt like an idiot if no one figured out who he was supposed to be. Would have regretted letting what Brandon said to him get to him enough to decide to wear one at all. “And you…” he trailed off, squinting at Rae for a couple seconds like that would help him figure out who or what she was supposed to be. “Look cute, but, I got nothing on who you are. Fill me in?” He rubbed at the back of his neck before giving her an amused expression at her compliment.
“I do clean up pretty good, huh?” He knew he looked good, not that looks had ever been a thing with him, but he knew he was good looking in the same way most people were aware of their own looks. And he wasn't going to be falsely modest about shit like that. He hated when people did that.
“It took me a while to figure out who it was in the dark wig. Probably shouldn’t have, since there aren’t that many pregnant women around, but,” he left the statement unfinished with a shrug of his shoulders before grabbing a glass from the table and dropping into one of the empty chairs nearby. “Where’d you find it anyways?” Small talk was something he could do. A habit picked up from years of driving cab he supposed.
And he liked talking to Rae, so that probably made it easy too.
He slouched further down into the chair, stretching his legs out in front of him, making himself comfortable. He hadn’t sat at all for most of the night; it felt good to get off his ankle for a couple minutes.
