Maddie rolled her eyes, but couldn’t keep the smirk off her face. In his place, she’d have gone for the vulgar mental image, too. It was just how siblings operated sometimes. Each trying to gross out the other. “I think you should find me some brain bleach, or make some. You totally owe me after that disgusting mental image.”
“If not for you working there, I don’t think I’d even know who the hell Wren is.” Because the doctor was so quiet, kept to herself mostly. It really wasn’t that odd that the shy doctor had been taking fewer shifts. Maybe she was slowly turning into a shut-in. Rory, on the other hand, liked people. Maybe she was just busy with her monster of a kid, though. Maddie gave a laugh at her brother’s cocky response. “Too bad Charlie’s not around to hear you say that. Nothing’s more entertaining than a ‘who’s the better doc’ debate.”
Hand super glued to his face. Maddie tried to keep a straight face at that, she really did. But it was too funny not to acknowledge with a snort of laughter. “Well, since you put the idea in my head…” She said, not-so-subtly hinting at a future prank. “Could be appropriate revenge for calling me that in front of my friends.”
“It’s okay. You’re old; easy to forget things now.” She poked her tongue out at him. He started to backtrack on his offer to stick with her, obviously using it as a ploy to get her to admit that she actually needed him around (which she did), and Maddie reached out to grab his sleeve and tugged him in the direction she needed to go. “Nope, but you’re coming anyway. Because you’d be soooo worried that little sis will wind up bleeding in one of these empty cells.” There. That was better than admitting she needed protection.
