Hearing David’s voice made Lexi pause in her retreat. She schooled her features before she turned. A couple days ago, she’d been prepared to put on the act of friendly ex-girlfriend wanting to reconnect with the ex-boyfriend. Now she wasn’t sure she wanted to. Or even if she could.
“Hi.” Really? That was all she had to say? Lexi hugged herself, trying to summon an echo of what she used to feel for David. She wasn’t having much luck. She’d had several months to discard whatever feelings she’d had for him. That was probably the saddest part. That she couldn’t even summon a smile to offer in greeting.
Lexi was quiet while he stumbled out an apology. She waved it off. “I understand. You were busy.” They both knew the real reason he hadn’t shown up, though. She didn’t admit that she hadn’t shown up either.
“You look…” He didn’t look good. Much as losing Ollie had affected her appearance, losing Elliot had affected David’s. His expression was sadder. At least there was one thing they had in common. Death of a sibling. “It’s… good to see you again.”
