The courtyard was the perfect location for a semi-private rendezvous. It was never overly crowded, especially now that the weather was getting colder. The shrubbery was tall and expansive enough to not completely hide two people, but conceal them enough to make it difficult to tell what they were doing unless a spy was close enough.
Lexi stood there now. Not hiding, not spying. Chewing on her fingernails and contemplating exactly why she’d chickened out of meeting David here. She could’ve easily achieved the two goals she’d set for herself: make it look like she was baiting David, trying to cause tension between him and Eloise, where in reality Lexi would be giving him a warning instead. A warning about the people she’d come into the compound with.
So why hadn’t she gone through with it? Fear, maybe. Fear of what Tallis and the others would do if they found out she’d ratted them out. Or maybe fear of what the people in the compound would do to her, Lexi, if she revealed her groups true intentions. What if David held that much resentment towards her, that he’d throw her to the wolves as soon as he learned the truth?
The scuffle of shoes on the walkway alerted her to someone’s presence. Lexi didn’t want to be caught standing around on her own, even if she wasn’t doing anything. Enough suspicion was already being thrown her way. Casually, without looking to see who had disturbed her, she stepped out from behind the shrubbery and started walking off in a different direction.
