As ever, just like he had when he was younger, Rae was unsurprised by the attitude she got when her cousin rolled out of bed. It had always felt like Luke was more of a younger sibling than a cousin. April, too. She'd never had siblings of her own; her parents had been happy with just one child, and that was fine by her. The closeness she had with her cousins more than made up for the lack of a younger sibling in her life.
She chuckled at Luke's response and shook her head. “Yeah, but if you did, I wouldn't get any cool science class things like dinosaurs do. I'd just be gone. Poof. No more Rae and no more EJ,” she said with a slightly sad smile. It would've been funnier if she hadn't entertained the thought herself when Elliot died, probably. Now it was a distant thought, something she'd never do, because her son was the most important thing in her life, but joking about it still struck that devastating chord in her heart and reminded her of how she'd felt when he'd just passed.
Shaking her head no, she brought her hand up to touch the pendant necklace hanging from her neck. “This didn't come with one either, though. Part of me wonders if we have a pair of secret admirers.”
Offering Luke his box, she sat on her bed again and smoothed a hand through her hair. “Want to do it at the same time or one at a time?”
