WHO: Lexi
WHEN: October 6, 2019; dusk
WHERE: Guard Tower 1, near the front gate
WHAT: Pondering the ponderable.
RATING: TBD.
Five months, or such was the nearest estimate; that was how long Allie had been away from Sing Sing. So much had changed during that length of time. The colony had evolved, expanded, thrived. Moved on without her. She hadn’t expected things to stay the same, wasn’t even sure she wanted them to have stayed the same. She wasn’t even the same. The woman who was Allie was gone, buried deep, along with memories of her brother. Becoming Lexi had helped her function. Everyone at Sing Sing remembered her as Allie. The flamboyant young woman who seemed outwardly stupid but was in fact inwardly brilliant. The loving girlfriend and friend. The otherwise useless one who cared too much about her looks at the end of the world. That woman was gone, though, because of a colossal mistake. One she was still paying for. Lexi didn’t want to be here. Not really. But it was the only place she knew of that was inhabited by people she knew. Not family, probably not even friends at this point… but familiars. It was complicated, trying to explain how she both wanted and didn’t want to be here, and likely would’ve been still considering whether to approach the gate at all if not for Tallis and her group’s insistence. Lexi was the intel. The one with firsthand knowledge of how Sing Sing operated. She was their way in. The distraction, a role she was perfect for. With any small amount of luck, she could play up the role of Allie, work herself back into at least a few people’s good graces. Enough to earn their trust and accomplish what Tallis and the group wanted. She didn’t have a place to stay. Oh, she probably could’ve bunked with one of her group, but the sad fact of the matter was, they all scared her. She did an exceptional job of masking that fear, but it was there all the same. Besides, it would be easier to gain the trust of Sing Sing’s residents again if she didn’t associate too closely with the people she came in with. A guard tower had become her sanctuary of solace for the time being. It was too drafty to be a comfortable sleeping area (not to mention the fact that it was a guard tower), but it was getting too dark to find a place to sleep now. She hunkered down in her hoodie, leaning against the outer wall so that she could stare out over what she could see of the prison grounds. Thoughtful, reminiscent. Waiting for something to happen. Rumor of her return was probably spreading throughout the compound right now. Within the next few days, she expected to be bombarded with an endless amount of questions. None of them would be easy to answer. For now, though, Lexi took peace from the solitude while she was able. |
