He rifled off a brief list of what he did here in the clinic and Leah’s eyes widened slightly. “And you normally do all this stuff yourself? That must keep you busy. But yeah, I’ll think about it. I’ll need something useful to do, anyway.”
“Having that little reminder around will be a comfort, I’m sure.” The same way Marigold was a comfort to her. “Elliot was a good man. I can’t imagine your nephew not taking after him.” Inclining her head, she gave a one-shouldered shrug when he asked permission to ask her something. “Yeah, sure.”
She politely took the comfort for what it was. “I know. Nothing bad will happen.” Or so she hoped. A smile came when Evan was mentioned. “He’s… excited. Looking forward to it.” In the simplest terms.
“It’s a possibility. Something I could bring up to leadership or security. Who knows, other people might’ve had the same idea already. Things are a lot less organized with O’Brien out of commission.” If the current Head of Security didn’t get his sight back soon, they might have to consider permanently appointing someone else for the position. Leah, for one, wasn’t so sure she trusted the man currently in charge, considering he’d shot O’Brien in the past. Theirs was a friendship Leah didn’t understand.
Leah minded, but she didn’t press the issue, instead letting it drop as they followed the path to the daycare building. When they got there, Leah went in to collect Marigold, who’d been playing some sort of pretend game with a couple of her friends, then walked back out to join David.
The little girl smiled and waved when she saw David.
