"I kissed him..." Rae said quietly, under her breath as she stared down at her hands. They were in public. So, surely he wouldn't make a scene. Right? She didn't even need to be looking to know what David's expression was doing. That thing it always did when he got mad. Surprise. Realization. Twisting into anger. And she still wasn't looking when she heard him speak up again. "No you didn't." It wasn't a question. It was a statement. Like he knew it to be true. The sky was blue and Rae had not been the one to kiss Silas. "He kissed you. Don't defend him like that. I'll kill him." His voice was stern. More denial than refusal to believe that Rae had been the initiator. And because of that, Rae was loathe to tell him that he was wrong. Not because she wanted to pit it all on Silas. She definitely didn't. But she already felt so distant from David and from everyone else left in her little makeshift family that she feared that this would be the thing to push them away for good. "No." She shook her head and swallowed thickly. "He didn't kiss me, David. I kissed him. It wasn't his fault. He pushed me away." She still hadn't looked up. "Are you serious?" David asked, that same anger dripping from his tone as Rae felt him stand from where he'd been sitting beside her. She finally raised her head and looked at him, but when she did, she wished she hadn't. He looked disgusted with her. She recognized the lookâit was the same look Leah used to give her all the time. "I'm..." she started, but David held his hand up and shook his head, like nothing she could say could justify what she'd done. "A month. He's been gone a month. And you think that means it's okay to slut yourself out to whoever is willing to give you the time of day?" He was yelling now. Glaring at her and yelling. "Is he the only one? Probably not, right? There have probably been others. Luke? You banging him, too? I know you're hanging around him all the time too. Who else? Should I warn Rory about Finn, too?" Rae's mouth was open to defend herself, but David shook his head no. "I guess I shouldn't be surprised, should I?" he asked, his voice booming through the now-silent cafeteria. "Once a slut, always a slut." She looked at him, horrified, and then around at the people who were all staring at them like they were some circus side show. "Keep doing shit like that and you'll end up alone." He seethed, as he turned and walked away. Holding herself together, she stood and walked into the kitchen from the cafeteria. It wasn't the first time she'd been called a slut, which was probably what allowed her to keep herself composed long enough to tell Cindy and Kanji that she was going home. She held her head high and squared her shoulders, blinking back the tears in her eyes as she left the cafeteria under the stares of those who had been there to see the scene. No way would she let them see her come undone. No way would she let them know how much he'd hurt her. She closed the door to her room behind her, leaned against it, and closed her eyes, letting herself cry for just a few seconds. I should... I should probably warn Silas. That David knows, she thought, glancing over at her phone and swallowing nervously. Never should've told him. Should have just... let it go. That's what I get. For being honest... |
