The shift in demeanor didn't go unnoticed, but David didn't point it out, because he knew what guys like Marcus were like when someone pointed out their weaknesses. Enough encounters with Brandon Stone would do that to a person. "Well, cats are strange like that. They can find entertainment in the oddest ways. Even just being scratched is entertaining to them." David shrugged. They really were simple creatures.
Barely catching the frown, David arched an eyebrow. For someone who didn't seem to want the cat, Marcus seemed annoyed when it gave attention to someone else. "Not really," David explained. "It's a nice temporary shelter for them, but I'd honestly prefer that all these animals had a home with a person who could take care of them, you know?" he asked. "That's not to say that I don't take care of them. But I'm not here all the time. There are breakins. Things happen when I'm not around. Not even two weeks ago, someone let all the animals out and this little lady ended up bullied by some of the bigger cats." He pointed over at the cages.
"Your place may be small, but it's bigger than where she was staying." Referring to the cages.
He shrugged. "I'm not saying you have to keep her. I'll take her back if you'd really like me to. But she seems to like you." As if to emphasize the point, the kitten looked up at Marcus with its bright eyes wide. "And if you're better prepared, I'm sure she'll be less of an inconvenience."
