When it came to injuries sustained in the many confrontations with Lily/Margaret, Silas was starting to feel like he’d gotten off easy. Just a tumble on some concrete. Nothing quite as bad as being blinded or stabbed or any of the other things that had happened. A couple days of bedrest in the infirmary had fixed him right up. Or, rather, back to his normal recovery. The buddy system had been abolished, which meant people were free to go about their daily routines without someone glued to their sides 24/7. Silas was glad. He hadn’t minded looking out for people, but constantly being around people wasn’t a necessary requirement for him. He enjoyed his quiet time. Rae had invited him over for a game of cards. That wasn’t unusual. No, she wasn’t calling on him daily for anything now, but she hadn’t cut him out of her life. That was good. They were friends and he was perfectly okay with that. It was more than he’d hoped for, really. Going to her apartment was also putting him in the habit of going up and down stairs again. It was a rigorous exercise for his leg, but the reward was always worth it. He climbed those stairs now, making his way to Rae’s apartment. Stopping at her door, he raised his fist to knock. “It’s Silas,” he called. |
