They made Luke feel young and reckless in the best way, like he was walking home from a party or some kind of crazy . Something about the new light and the quiet brought out the best things about Sing Sing, and it became like exploring an abandoned building -- like something from a movie, maybe, or a book about interesting people. Maybe it was the fact that George was okay with coming out, even though they'd barely slept the night before. (Luke had been having nightmares recently, but he hid the fact by pretending to have inspirational moments where he had to turn the light on and write something down and text her stupid things.)
Now they were traipsing down an empty hallway, and his bat was swinging in his hand like a baton. Luke looked at George from the corner of a tired eye, trying to smile; instead he broke into a majestic yawn, half-laughing at the end of it.
They turned the corner and he found his words again, chattering at her in a flat, disinterested tone. "Anyyyyway, like I was saying, it's totally... I mean, okay, it sounds like Nirvana or whatever but... That's all me, right? It's so me. It's really-"
Clunk!
Luke was so absorbed in his genius that he barely noticed the phone; it slipped under his sneaker, skittering away and into the wall. After that, things happened kind of quickly; he looked at down, considering the object. Then his eyes caught on something bright and red in front of him, and he glanced upward to see Silas and--
A body.
The sight of it registered easily in Luke's mind, like an object; it was as if he were looking at a pile of leaves or a teapot. He glanced from the fallen woman to Silas and back again, and the bat suddenly snapped upward into a ready position.
Luke suddenly felt very angry.
"I fucking knew it," he hissed, sneering. "I knew there was something weird about you."
The reflex then was to step in front of George, make himself larger. "If you know what's good for you you'll fucking put your hands up, Hannigan. I swear I'll cave your fucking head in. George, call someone. Get security."
