Seeing her like that was tough. He didn't really know her all too well but the Maddie he'd gotten used to seeing wasn't like this. He still wondered what could've possessed her to come out here like this by herself, but for now the important issue was getting her out of here and back to safety, at least on the roof. Then he'd question her further.
When she answered his question, not with some witty quip but with an answer that wasn't even close to her normal self, he felt even worse. Which was pretty fucking ridiculous, since he hadn't done a damn thing wrong to her.
He was about to tell her not to worry about it for now, that he could tell her later, when she answered. A keyboard. "A keyboard?" He gave her a look, and shook his head no. "Just a keyboard. Come on, there has to be more than that. You're a pretty sharp chick... you know how bad an idea it is to walk around out here right now with all this crap going on."
Brandon pointed at the window and stood aside. "You go ahead and go first. Head up to the roof, but then stop, because I want you to answer me when we get up there. A real answer. Not just a keyboard." Because she wasn't that careless; that stupid. He refused to believe that.
When he stepped out onto the fire escape once he saw that she was on her way to the top, he couldn't help but look down at the infected below for a second. Too fucking many of them down there. Endless predators outside the walls, but then inside there was something potentially worse than that. How'd the world come to this?
Shaking that thought off, he made his way up to the roof to meet up with Maddie and looked at her seriously. "Why were you out here, really? Other than the keyboard." If that was the real reason. "I think I deserve a little honesty right now, don't you?"
