“I’m the crazy one?” She put a hand to her chest to indicate herself, then pointed a finger at him. “You’re the one lying on the ground laughing like a damn lunatic.”
It was too dark to see faces, but Maddie could see figures appearing and moving in the windows of A Block. People were watching, like the asphalted area that served as an outdoor recreation area was a stage, and she and Luke were actors putting on a dramatic scene.
Maddie shifted her weight angrily from one foot to the other. This was getting them both noticed, but she was loath to let it show that she was actually okay with the attention.
Luke still hadn’t made any attempt to get up, which was stupid. Like he was doing it on purpose just to infuriate her. “I didn’t do anything but try to shut you up. You fucked up your own elbows.” And that was just how it was. This wasn’t her fault. It was his for trying to goad her.
When he asked her to check out the state of his face, Maddie took a couple steps closer and leaned over slightly so that she could see at an angle that didn’t cast his face in shadow. “There’s an ugly scrape there, but it looks good on you. Gives your ugly face some ugly character.”
“Now you see why you don’t skateboard at night.” Her eyes scanned the immediate area, locating the skateboard several feet away. It was lying on the flat side, unable to roll away. She glared at it.
