Botswana? David's eyes widened at that. "Whoa." Well, in Botswana or not, it wasn't completely impossible that they'd make their way back. But he didn't mention that. "World travelers, huh?" he asked her.
When she asked asked about his own mother, he lowered his head and chuckled awkwardly. "Yeah." How did he explain? "Before I was born, when Elliot was little, she was on this ridiculous wild streak. I mean, parties, bars... Elliot had a lot of babysitters because she didn't really... grow up, you know? But after I was born, she sort of settled down with my dad. She loved him and everything, so she evened out." Calmed herself. "Her wildness became more eccentricities than general wildness, you know?"
She went quiet and David figured she was just thinking. Like she always did. He didn't say anything to interrupt her—he liked it when she got contemplative like this, after all—just waited for her to come back to reality.
When she did, though, he realized that she'd slowed, practically to a stop. He turned and looked at her, an eyebrow arched in concern.
