There it was. Seeing David always gave Ellie a silly, sugary little rush -- it didn't seem to matter what the circumstances were, or what had been on her mind a moment earlier. Regrets, difficulties... It was easy not to think of them -- or anything at all, really -- when he was looking at her like that. Smiling. Ellie loved that smile. It made her want to dance and throw confetti in the air and text everyone she knew about how shiny it made her feel.
(Which was ridiculous, frankly, but admittedly one of the easier feelings of late.)
She fidgeted slightly through his stammering -- a happy fidget, as it accompanied her struggle not to smile too widely or giggle for no reason -- and shrugged, beaming.
"Distracting you," Ellie said at last, simply. She lifted a hand to sign him an emphatic R as an explanation.
The thought of Rae reminded her again of the other purpose, the other reason behind a surprise like this one -- but for as much as she'd thought about things all afternoon, Eloise was no closer to knowing how to say even half of what she wanted to. Except the easy things -- she could say those.
"I want to go out," she added, turning the reader over in her hands. "With this. I want to see what... See what it does. Show me?"
