Adjusting. That was what David was doing. Not getting used to the way life was now, really, but adjusting to it. Elliot was gone, and now David was the one who had to take care of the things he'd left behind. Chief among those things was Rae. He didn't know how she could be so okay, so quickly go back to doing things that she used to do, but she had. She was already doing kitchen work again, and he couldn't help but feel like she was forgetting. Too soon. A part of him knew that she had to grieve her own way; that she wouldn't forget him, but part of him also felt somewhat resentful.
I just need to drop these cookies off for Ellie, say hi to her, then get changed. Then I'll go see how she's doing. Taking care of her. Like his brother had asked.
He went to unlock his door, but just as quickly remembered that Ellie was there, so he didn't need to unlock it. The smile on his face became a little more genuine when he thought of his temporary roommate, and he pushed the door open, his eyes on the floor.
When he raised his head, he froze.
Ellie... sat on the bed. Looking absolutely beautiful. And holding his EMF reader.
He blinked a couple of times and the smile on his face became more of a grin. "Whoa..." he muttered under his breath at first, blinking a couple of times. "What... when did..." he trailed off. As usual, when put into a situation like this, words failed him. "Elle, you look..." Words. Words, David. "You look amazing."
Okay. That was a good start. "What're you..." More words... "What's up?" Okay, not the best choice of words, but at least he'd said something. He could've asked about the EMF reader, or whatever else, but... none of those questions struck him at the moment. "What're you..."
Well. He'd tried. At least the connectors from his brain to his mouth hadn't totally failed him.
