“Yeah, yeah. Rub it in, why don’t ya?” Maddie grumbled with an amused smirk. “We tall people are good at not being seen, too. And it makes it easier to climb over fences and crap.” Which definitely came in handy when evading the undead. “Believe it or not, I’m actually really awesome when it comes to blending in with my surroundings.” A stark contrast to how she was when she wanted to be noticed.
She gave a thumbs-up when the other girl told her that picking the lock wouldn’t take long, then resumed peering around the corner. Code names. Maddie gave an involuntary bark of laughter and clamped a hand over the place below the rubber muzzle where the mouth hole was. It was a lot different doing this kind of thing with a partner. Maddie had never had a coconspirator in her mischief before. It required communicating and doing things a little differently than she normally would have, as well as, apparently, stifling her amusement, but she wasn’t about to complain. If anything, it was more fun having Caitie around.
“Wolfmonster,” she repeated a chuckle in her voice as she glanced at Caitie and held both her hands up in a mockingly terrifying manner. “The Scary Dubya Em,” she said in her Southern drawl. “The name totally fits for tonight. Think I’ll just call you Bill. Or would you prefer Mr. President?” She giggled.
No one was in sight or hearing distance, so Maddie took a momentary break from lookout duty to observe Caitie’s lock picking prowess. Not everyone around Sing Sing kept their doors locked, which was why, whenever Maddie was curious, she always took the easy way and went to those rooms. Learning to pick locks would be a useful skill to have if she ever wanted a more subtle way of breaking into a room without… literally breaking into the room.
She laughed when Caitie’s words put that very image of a twirly French villain mustache in her head. “Oh man, I might have to snag one of those cigarette smoker thingies. I don’t even friggin’ care that I don’t smoke. Those things are cool.”
Maddie heard when the lock clicked, signaling that the door was open. She perked up from her place leaning against the wall and walked back over to the now open door. She grinned at her new friend. “Let’s have some fun, Mr. President.”
