Once again, he laughed. “That's true, I suppose. And I've done the exact same for you.” Since the beginning, they'd been on an even keel. Fortunately, that keel was far more pleasant now than it had been then. “That's something I've always appreciated about you, though. Even when we were enemies, you were always honest with me.” Usually brutally.
“It's true. There's not much she does that isn't cute, is there?” he asked with a little smirk, turning his head to look at Marigold again. As far as kids went, she was pretty spectacular. Evan wasn't anti-children; not even close, really. But he knew how children could be. And Marigold probably had more right to be “like that” than anyone else, but she wasn't. She was a good kid; well behaved and friendly. “Pretty sure you'll never find anything,” he added with a little chuckle. It had been hard not to say we there, instead of you, but he'd managed.
He smiled at the look on her face, but his mouth fell open in shock at her threat. “All right, all right, I'll be good, I promise!” he said, though he was unable to keep his face from breaking into a smile. Seeing her happy like this was so nice.
“It's possible that she has,” Evan pointed out. Not that Rae or Elliot had been presented with any time alone with Leah's daughter, but sometimes they stood in eyesight but out of earshot. And... there was the time that the two of them had spent together in the facility before Elliot and Evan had shown up to save them, too. He wondered if Rae had told Marigold about their Little One then. “She certainly doesn't seem to be hiding her baby. Not that I can blame her. The two of them deserve some good, too. Something to brag about, I mean.” They'd had a hellish year. More so than anyone else Evan knew. He was glad things were falling into place for them, finally.
Evan nodded. “I wouldn't say it if I wasn't sure.” She continued on, and Evan shook his head. “I understand, cher. Really. You've got a family.” As did he, scattered though they were. “I can't expect you to spend all of your time with me. That wouldn't be very fair of me, would it?” he reassured her with a loving smile. “I'm patient. You know that.” And when he was in things, he was all in. This relationship was one of those things.
