“Of course I do,” Evan nodded and chuckled. “You can't get angry at me for pointing out the truth, cher.” Or, she probably could, but when this was the truth he was pointing out? He sincerely doubted that she would. She pointed out anobvious flaw in his logic and he laughed, shrugging a shoulder to concede to her point. “I guess not. But I still stand by what I said. And I'm pretty sure she does, too.” A little part of him was jealous that he'd never get a chance to have a child of his own while his girlfriend and best friend both had theirs, but the rest of him was satisfied, watching her raise hers and helping whenever they'd let him.
Evan chuckled again and shrugged. “You're both my star students,” he corrected her. If anything, it said more for Leah, the fact that she was still picking things up as quickly as she was. It was significantly harder to learn a second language once you started getting older, and Leah was already doing well. “Don't worry, cher. I won't. If she makes fun, it'll have to be in English.” He gave her a little grin that said that even that wouldn't be happening.
Shrugging a shoulder innocently and making a playful face, he shrugged a shoulder. “I can't stop you. Just, you know... don't be surprised if you give me a complex and I'm not so good at things like that anymore.” And that would be the last thing he said about it, at least until they had their alone time later. And mon dieu am I looking forward to that, he thought with an inward chuckle.
To say that Evan was shocked that Leah didn't make a dig at Rae's former profession in light of the topic of conversation would have been an understatement. “I'd probably pay to see that conversation, to be honest. Rae's not stupid but I don't think I've ever seen her embarrassed. And Elliot may think he's hard to embarrass, but that's only because he hasn't had a four year old—someone else's four year old, for that matter—tugging on his pantleg and asking where babies come from.”
When she asked him if it bothered him, his response was almost instantaneous. He shook his head and took her hand in his with a genuine, loving smile. “It doesn't. I understand, cher. Believe me. And you're more than worth the wait. So as far as I'm concerned... not bothered.” He'd take her attention when he could get it, and between, he'd be patient. “I was more or less aware that it would happen when I hatched my plan to get her back.”
