So immersed was she in her search, that she didn't hear the child's wails getting closer to her. Or maybe she heard them, but she didn't notice them. But when she heard the woman's voice, she jumped and turned around, eyes wider than saucers when she realized that she'd been found out.
“Supposed to...” she asked, swallowing the nervous lump that had appeared in her throat.
What did she say? The woman had caught her, right? But... she couldn't just own it. She'd be in so much trouble and she'd heard little rumors here and there about what that O'Brien guy did when you were deemed trouble. So, she had to try something. Anything.
