Normally, Mimi would've sensed someone's presence around her. People often claimed that when you lost one sense, the others enhanced to practically-superhuman, and Mimi knew that to be true, for the most part. But today, she was so distracted by watching the downpour outside, feeling the thunder then counting until she saw lightning, that she hadn't noticed anyone else in the room.
Until she felt the touch on her shoulder. She jumped a little bit, vaguely worried that it was some kind of infected, but when she turned and saw a blond—one of the Stone girls that was friendly with Rae and Elliot, she remembered—she relaxed. Her trademark smile came back and she struggled to read the girl's lips a little in the darkness of the room. “I'm sorry dear, if you could speak a little clearer...”
She paused, figuring that probably warranted a little bit of explanation, just in case the sound of her voice wasn't a dead giveaway.
“I can't hear. And I have a little bit of a tough time reading lips in the dark, so if maybe you could step a little closer to the window and speak clearly? I'll more than likely be able to understand you a lot better.” She didn't like to let her lack of hearing define her, but sometimes, times like this, it was tough not to. She didn't miss a beat, though, and the smile never left her face.
