Elliot shrugged and glanced away with an expression of faux-sheepishness. “Maybe a little bit.” He snorted at the very concept of David being the good one. “Yeah, no. He definitely wasn’t that. Dude got me in trouble more times than I can remember.” He laughed again. “If Mom was still alive and knew that her two boys were living in a prison, she’d probably make a joke about us sharing a cell with bunk beds.” As for the world-shaking revolution, Elliot could’ve easily discounted that with the fact that this revolution was hardly world-shaking. City-shaking, definitely. But he suspected they were a long, long way from being world-shaking.
His expression softened when she apologized. He shook his head. “Hey, after all the those times I woke you up because of something like that? I’d say a little payback is warranted.” An attempt to lighten the mood, because he knew what was still bothering her. Providing a sense of normalcy seemed to help. Most of the time.
Elliot grinned when Rae started rifling off a list of their best traits, combining them into their dream child. Not that any child they had would be anything less than amazing, but it was still amusing to think about. “Sounds like the coolest kid ever, if you ask me.”
With his hand held in place over her stomach, it was easy for Elliot to imagine the little one already moving around in there. Of course, it was still a little early for that, but he was letting his imagination get carried away. “Nah, I’d say we’re the lucky ones,” he said quietly, reluctantly pulling his eyes away from their joined hands.
For both of their sakes, Elliot was glad he wasn’t privy to Rae’s doubts concerning how much he trusted her. It wasn’t that he didn’t trust her, but she could get carried away at times with her optimism. It was a balance, what they had. She kept him from being too negative about things and he, well, he’d become the voice of reason. Events from earlier this year had set him on a path to wondering what sort of man he was becoming… and if it would turn into a downward spiral from there. Yet more reasons he had to worry about the state of their relationship. So, yes, he was definitely glad that he wasn’t aware of Rae’s thoughts. “I’d say I’d want to hog Cooking Sunshine, too, but that’d be too greedy of me, wouldn’t it?” he replied, the grin returning.
Her reaction to the coldness made him chuckle in spite of himself. “Told you,” he said, smirking. Taking the silent cue, Elliot clasped her free hand with his, giving it a squeeze while he focused his attention on the screen. When he didn’t see anything right away, anxiousness made him bite his lip and slide the probe a little faster, speeding up the search. There was probably a very good reason why doctors weren’t supposed to perform these kinds of things on patients they were related to. Or involved with, in this case.
