It wasn't until then that Rae realized that however red-rimmed Elliot's eyes were? Hers were just as bad. She chuckled and ducked her head, wiping at her own eyes and then blinking to bring some of the normal moisture back. "They did, didn't they? The reunion, plus the sopping-wet-pink-haired girl standing ten feet away sobbing like she's at a chick flick… that'd amuse anyone, I think," she half-smiled.
Everything about the situation seemed foreign in this place, with all the odd looks they were giving. There was even a lady whispering to her companion about how odd it was. Rae couldn't hear the words, no. But the expressions on their faces said more than their words could have, anyway.
When Rae noticed that Elliot was tugging on the bottom of her—his, it was his—jacket, she looked down at his hands and then back up at him with a little smile.
"The grin would be nice," she said, before she pulled her hand away. "I definitely wouldn't complain about seeing that again."
If this was a movie, if this had been one of the romantic comedies that she'd loved so much back when they were still made, that would have been the moment that Rae leaned up and kissed him. She would have rocked onto the tips of her toes, put the hand that was on his cheek on the back of his neck and pulled him in for a kiss. But this wasn't a movie. This was a harsh reality and kissing him then was… a bad idea for a thousand different reasons. So, she just lowered her hand and smiled awkwardly at his grin, wondering if the embarrassment on her face was as evident as she thought it was.
"The world would be a happier place, that's for sure," she mused, putting her hands (or, more like, the entirety of her forearms) into Elliot's jacket. She'd have been lying if she tried to claim that she hadn't noticed the shift in the demeanor of the conversation. And it was her fault.
Idiot. Stupid idiot, she cursed herself, and she was about to bust out in an apology when, like a sign from some higher being, David reappeared with her hot cocoa. He glanced from her, to Eli, then back to her, offered the cocoa out to her with his head slightly tilted to the side and one eyebrow cocked, looking every bit the part of the curious puppy. And was Rae not so completely embarrassed with herself, she'd have said just that. So, she reached out to accept the cocoa, and was about to open her mouth to thank David for it, but she didn't get the chance.
Because he spoke up first. "It looks like I interrupted something…" he told them, eyebrow still arched as he looked from her to Eli.
