"I think you two will have fun together," she said, mostly to Marigold, looking at the little girl with a comforting smile. But she meant it for Leah, too. "I'm glad I could help bring you two back together," she added. That one was directed at Leah.
As soon as the words came out, Rae realized that she shouldn't have said them. She pulled her lower lip into her mouth and looked down, then back up at Leah in apology. She pondered telling the other woman that she was sorry she hadn't been so lucky, but decided against it just as quickly. Her hand moved from her stomach then, and fell to her side. As though it was inappropriate to touch the baby bump in front of Leah.
Rae felt herself tense when Leah spoke again. "Y-yeah. Me too..." she agreed sheepishly. While she was glad to be having a nice conversation with Leah, she suddenly wanted to get out of there. Quickly.
"No problem," she responded with a sad smile, her expression apologizing for being the one who had to deliver the message here. "If you need any help-" she started, but quickly thought better of it. "… I'm sure you won't need any help. You'll be a great caretaker," she told Leah, glancing at Marigold and smiling reassuringly.
She looked at Leah again. "All right," she finally said. "I'll leave you to it, then. If you need anything, don't hesitate to ask me, okay?" She cared about Marigold, too, even though Leah hated her.
