Rae watched the different emotions as Leah processed them, and she felt the need to look away. Leah didn't like her. Leah would never like her. So... seeing her like this felt like an intrusion on a private moment of realization, and she felt guilty for it. While she normally would have been all advice and understanding in a situation like this, her mind, her emotions weren't in a good place right now. So she couldn't let herself look, couldn't let herself talk to Leah beyond her explanation, especially since she knew what the woman was capable of doing to her.
Instinct, however, was a hard thing to quell. She looked back up at Leah just in time to see realization hit her, and stepped forward and put a hand on her shoulder, an attempt at comfort. She wanted to say something. An apology for it being her to deliver the news seemed wrong, because she was glad to help Leah, but... she wanted to say something. "I can't imagine how difficult this must be for you, but..." she trailed off, not even bothering to finish that sentence.
When Leah called Marigold by her government-given name, it sounded wrong to even Rae's ears. She turned her head to the little girl and smiled. "Why don't you go see the nice lady, hm?" she asked with an insecure smile. She wasn't sure how Marigold would react to that, but she had to try. "This is the one I told you about. The one who'll want you to stay with her."
She handed Marigold over to Leah, then looked at the woman when she asked her next question.
That was one of those questions that had no right answer. "Um... only what I've told her. I've been calling you the queen, because she likes fairy tales," she explained. "And she knows that she'll be staying with you..." if both of you want to, I mean, she almost tacked on. "I... didn't feel right telling her much else than that. I figured you'd want to do that..." she spoke, her voice a shadow of its normal confidence. She was still waiting for the inevitable Leah snap. The moment where she crushed Rae under her boot. It wouldn't take much today.
"I've got a couple things of hers... Elliot's holding on to them for me. If you want them..."
