[lulz, wrong journal.... that's what i get for rushing to get to work XD]
Elliot wasn’t quite sure how he was even able to tune out his vengeful thoughts, but he managed, likely (and thankfully) due to his ability to stay coolheaded during an emergency. This wasn’t one of those operating room type of emergencies, though. No, this type of emergency was more along the lines of the Liberty Island incident. That he was able to stay relatively focused during all of this was a huge accomplishment, especially when Rae began a vague explanation of what she’d been through while she’d been held prisoner in this facility. He didn’t trust himself to respond rationally to that, so he didn’t.
“It’s okay that you’re not okay right now, babe,” he said, shaking his head. “I’d be a mess too if I was kept locked up in this place…” It may or may not have been the best choice of words, given her current state, but he was just trying to reassure her.
The part of Elliot that wasn’t detached during the whole thing, wondered at his ability to murder a human being so easily. He was a medic. He was supposed to save lives, not take them. Maybe he was becoming a monster, but then, they didn’t exactly live in normal times anymore. People killed people. People stole from people. Undead people ate people. That was just the way it was.
He shook his head fervently when Rae apologized. “No. My fault,” he said. For shooting that man, however necessary it was. The action had rattled the fragile glass that was Rae’s nerve. He should’ve… No. No, there hadn’t been any other choice. The man had to die.
Elliot was fueled by pure adrenaline now. Carrying Rae across the grass to the lot where the trucks were parked seemed like an impossibly long trip, not because she was heavy, but because this was the last stretch of their escape. Get to the truck and they’d be safe. His eyes found Rae’s when she thanked him, and he blinked in surprise. “I wouldn’t have just left you here…” Even without the knowledge of the torment he’d been through during the past week, she had to know that he wouldn’t just abandon her so easily.
“You’ll be fine.” He said it lightly, but the question gnawed at him. What had they done to her in there? Once they were safe back at Sing Sing, he could find out. For now, he just wanted to continue giving her reassurance.
The first truck had already pulled out of the lot, but the second was still loading. Elliot settled Rae into one of the seats, only vaguely noting that Rory wasn’t in this one. He still held to the hope that she was alive and had simply been in the first truck that had just left. “We’ll be home in no time, babe,” he said, settling into the seat beside her.
