His gaze shot back to Rae when she expressed just how much she wanted this place obliterated. Elliot nodded his agreement. “Maybe we’ll get that chance someday. They’d probably be expecting that, though. Especially after this…”
“We’ll make sure we’re in the same truck as Rory. I promise,” he said. Of course, it might’ve been a bad time to be promising anything like that, in case Rory was dead or things were so rushed that they had to take the first truck that was available. But Rae needed reassurance, and Elliot gave it.
Elliot wasn’t really listening when Rae told him not to try taking on the lone guard. He was listening, but he wasn’t paying attention or heeding her warning. The man needed to die for the torture he’d put Rae through. And that was why Elliot happily squeezed the trigger three times. He probably would’ve used all the bullets in the gun, if not for the sense that he might need them.
The man was dead, but the footsteps (multiple ones) were still pounding on the floor, headed their way. Friend or foe, it didn’t matter. They needed to get out of the building and to the truck.
Elliot saw out of the corner of his eye when Rae collapsed to her knees. Tucking the gun back in his pants, he knelt down in front of her, hands resting on her shoulders in an attempt to keep her from breaking down completely. He shook his head when she began talking — stuttering, really — and shushed her with a kiss to the forehead. “It’s okay, I’ll carry you.”
Gathering her up in his arms, Elliot spared Evan a glance to make sure the man was still with him, then jogged down the hall toward the exit. The alarms were quieter on the outside, but still no less attracted the undead, which were gathered around the chain-link fence surrounding the building, trying to get in. Elliot made for the first truck he could see, ignoring the gunfire he could still hear coming from the building. By the looks of it, they were one of the last groups to make it out of the government facility. If they’d taken any longer, they might’ve been left behind.
