To be honest, even Rae wasn't sure of what was going through her head. Her optimistic nature was just... gone. She felt like she'd been pushed into a shell when they'd locked her into this room, and even though she was able to leave that room now, she still didn't feel like that shell would be broken. But if she had her way, they wouldn't be separated like this again. And him reaffirming that was more comfort than he probably realized, even if it didn't sound like she believed it right now.
They had her outnumbered. She nodded weakly. "I tried," she whispered. She'd tried so hard not to let them get her. "I even pulled an ID tag out of one guy's pocket, so you would know where they were," she added. He started blaming himself and she shook her head no. "Don't do that," she said, her voice not holding the slightest bit of bite in it. "Don't blame yourself. You couldn't have stopped me from going, because I was so determined to protect Rory. If anyone's to blame, it's not you. Or me. It's these government psychopaths and their stupid plans." She sincerely hoped someone killed every last one of them.
Logic should've told her to hurry, too. But she was just so glad, so relieved to see him again that she overlooked that bit of logic and allowed herself a slightly more genuine smile after he kissed her and told her that he loved her too. That was her reason for fighting. That unbreakable love they had. "And that's why I kept fighting," she said with the tiniest of smiles. "For you. Both of you," she added, knowing he'd know what she meant.
Finn. Right. "Good. Finn and Brandon will get her," she said, more in self-reassurance than anything else. She might panic if they didn't see Rory by the time they all left, but that was something she'd deal with when the time came. "We can't leave them behind..." Especially not when Rory had put herself on the line to keep Rae from being taken. She squeezed Elliot's hand as they hurried out the door, casting her eyes about frantically as they hurried down the hall.
Evan held securely onto Marigold, holding her head against his shoulder and reassuring her that it was okay when she closed her eyes in fear and buried them against his neck, and she was secretly glad that he was managing to stay levelheaded. With Elliot's tactical side coming out and Rae's panic, one of them needed to console her. For her sake, though, Rae tried to keep herself calm.
Until she saw the guard Elliot was referring to.
The sight of him made her heart-rate pick up, and she barely made it around the corner in time to avoid his gaze. Evan was weighing their options, looking around for an alternate exit, but Rae felt panic rising. "H-he's the..." she looked down at the crook of her arm. "He... he's the one who took me," she murmured. "And... and the one that did..." she trailed off, bending her arm to cover up the nasty bruises from where he'd drawn her blood.
Tears sprang to her eyes again, and she looked down and away from Elliot and Evan. "He's a monster," she whispered.
