Rae probably should have believed that. But the description Rory had just given, of what these men were trying to do to her? It had already been accomplished. These men had killed Leah's boyfriend, right? That was the story she'd heard. So they wouldn't hesitate to kill hers. But... Rory had hope. Rory was hopeful and believing that they'd be rescued and Rae couldn't take that away from her. She couldn't crush that hope, especially because she needed it for AJ's sake. So, she nodded. “They'll get us all out.”
She'd deal with her doubts later, when she was by herself again.
Straightening up and pulling in a deep breath, she gave Rory a weak smile. “Sorry,” she muttered. “I'm usually the one in your shoes...” she added with a bit of a chuckle. “Feels a little weird to be on the other end of the table when it turns.” But she couldn't help it.
So immersed was she in her thought process that she barely noticed that one of the children in the room had approached her. She turned her head sharply when she heard a small voice, but her face softened when she came eye-to-eye with a pretty little blond girl. She smiled and waved hello with her free hand.
“Hello there,” she said in a friendly voice. “I'm Rae, and these are my friends Rory and AJ,” she told the girl. “AJ's a little sleepy right now, but we'd be more than happy to talk to you.”
“What's your name?” she asked, reluctantly pulling her hand from Rory's and putting it down for the little girl to shake.
