Transforming the prison yard into a livable community was a task that everyone at Sing Sing seemed to have a hand in. Leah was no exception, although, thus far, her contributions had been limited to looting Ossining for supplies. It was an important task, raiding the town for necessities, but hers wasn’t really a group effort. She brought things back for her family and, occasionally, for Evan, but nothing that really contributed to Sing Sing as a whole. The greenhouses were the Science Team’s domain. The kitchen was Alghren’s. Rory and Zimmerman and the other medics had the only rightful claim on the medical ward. She had very little interest in dealing with O’Brien and his security methods. Everyone seemed to have their own niche around the prison, which put a huge limit on the things Leah felt she could do. She didn’t miss the government safehouses one bit, but having an actual purpose beyond being a supply-getter had been nice. Helping her brother set up playground equipment for the kids earlier in the week had been a good bonding experience. It gave her something to do, as well as allowed her to spend some much-needed time with her younger brother. Concern for Brandon’s mood had kept Leah’s thoughts from lingering too long on the reality of what she was helping with. Playground equipment. For kids. Her reason for generally avoiding such activities ran along the same lines as the reason she never offered to help Kori out in the daycare area. Today, she found herself putting some finishing touches on the kid-friendly area. Who could’ve guessed that the chin-up bars prisoners used to use when they had yard time would serve the perfect means from which to build a swing set? Finding swings with chains that weren’t completely eaten by rust had been a bit of a challenge, but in the end, Leah managed to construct a worthy place for kids (and adults) to enjoy the best part of the playground. Oblivious to her approaching company, Leah lifted another swing’s seat up so that she could hook one side of the chain in the loop that had been welded to the metal bar. She then let the seat dangle freely, and hooked the other side of the chain in the other loop. This particular swing was built for a younger child; the sides built up and leg holes in place to prevent falls. |
