Downtown Bellevue was not how he’d left it. Somewhere between today and the day he and his parents left for Pittsburgh, a fire had razed many buildings on the main street to the ground. Nothing was left but the scorched remains of brick, stone and wood. The streets were littered with bodies, both infected and not. The whole atmosphere of the place was one of gloom and despair. That was the site that greeted them when Elliot, David and Rae drove into Bellevue. As if the overcast day wasn’t enough of a mood-killer, the town that was once home to the Zimmerman family was no longer quaint and welcoming. Here and there, shufflers moved about, but no other infected type came into view. Elliot didn’t know whether to take this as a good sign or not. If there was a greater threat, he wanted to know exactly where it was… so they could all avoid it. Breaking to a stop in front of the charred remains of an old general store, Elliot cut the engine off on the vehicle and stared at what used to be his apartment building. If one could even call it an apartment building, such was the single room overtop the general store. The room he’d been renting while he was working his way to becoming an EMT. Admittedly, he never spent much time here. It was close to the hospital, an easier commute than having to drive all the way from home. It allowed him his first taste of independence for living on his own. But it wasn’t much more than a place to crash when he wasn’t training or taking tests or dropping in on his parents for a free meal. Now, there was nothing left. A couple walls of the general store were still standing, but the entire upper floor had collapsed. Elliot brushed his hand back and forth across his mouth, more concerned by the state of the whole town than by his apartment being destroyed. He glanced at his brother in the rear view mirror, then turned his head to look at Rae. “So, this is it. Was it. The place I lived when I wasn’t home bugging my parents.” |
