WotD drabble - Naruto, furbelow
furbelow \FUR-buh-low\, noun:
1. A pleated or gathered flounce on a woman's garment; a ruffle.
2. Something showy or superfluous; a bit of showy ornamentation.
Series: Naruto
Character: Sakura
Etc: Takes place around ep32/vol6
Count: 240
Sakura liked her hair long. Ino’s may be longer, but hers was in far better condition. It was silky and had a nice sheen. Since Sasuke reportedly liked girls with long hair, she’d have the nicest long hair of all the students in the academy. It was her one vanity, the one aspect of herself she really cared about outside of studying. No harm in that.
But she was willing to throw it all away. A weak shinobi like her couldn’t afford such frills, after all. Until she was able to hold her own ground, narcissism was impractical. She didn’t want to be saved by boys for the rest of her life; she wanted to pull her own weight and then some. How could anybody, including Sasuke and herself, respect a useless team member?
It only took a moment, the sharp kunai easily slicing off her taut hair. Later she’d wonder at how her head felt lighter. Now, she had friends to save. It was futile, her strength far below the enemy’s, but she didn’t care. Sakura would be unable to forgive herself if she didn’t die trying.
Sasuke and Naruto had tremendous chakra and little control—her opposites. But if somebody like Lee could become so strong by hard work, surely she could too? No matter how much it hurt, Sakura vowed to become strong. She’d never be able to live with herself if she stayed weak and worthless
