15 His heart is a dull ache in his chest, pulsing painfully in memory. Of Mytho, his prince; of a duck that was a princess.
In the pond by his house, a yellow duck used to follow him around. He fed her, protected her, loved her. But the lifespan of a duck is short; she died years ago.
He stares at the pen he never picked up, too much of a coward, too afraid to change. Now his life is stuck in the memory of his boyhood, replaying a fairytale of events that are at once a dream and the only real thing in his life.
It's not too late to change the outcome.
Hand barely able to form the words, he writes.
The duck was just a duck. It was never a girl.
As he forgets, he wonders if he'll find his happily ever after.
