Tory watched her open the present while he peeled his jacket off and wrapped it over his arm. He would have been holding his breath had he not come so recently in from the cold. As it was, every bated breath seemed scorching, and the anticipation was thick and heavy. Tory was a touch anxious at having waited so long to deliver the gift, especially since Laura’s present to him had arrived prior to the festivities. Although he had yet to make use of her book of music, the scarf was tucked into a jacket pocket, ready if he ever needed it. He probably should have worn it before he arrived, so she could see it. Tory was not used to being a boyfriend, or whatever they were, but he could already tell that it was different from being a fiancé.
There were few things that he gifted to Elendir over the years; he always thought that such things were not needed between the two of them. It was not as if he needed to win her attention or affections, since they were already bound but a much higher authority. Laura was different though, there was nothing compelling her to be with him. There was no need for her to seek him out, and no need for him to do the same. That is what made their interactions all the more precious and meaningful to him. There was no need for them to be with each other, yet they continued to do so.
Her response to the present was wholly satisfying. He grinned at her, a pleased expression showing on his face. “So you like it?” He asked. Tory went on to add, “I believe that it is better than going over and decorating your common room in glitter and wrapping paper.” Not that Tory would be one to do that to Mathey House, but that did not undermine the intention behind his words.
