Victoria is still a young Queen, only on the throne four years and the city is a dark place to live. It is not simply the pick-pockets and thieves that lurk in the dark alleys of London Town who are to be feared. There are much older, much crueller evils at work within the city. They have lived – witches, vampires, werewolves – in every strata of society, in every class, trying to conform, presenting themselves as normal to the outside world. Aided by a decades-old council of corrupt and complacent mortals they have kept themselves safe. But now the security and secrecy that have protected them is threatened. A monster stalks the streets, killing indiscriminately and disappearing into the foggy Victorian night. People are beginning to ask questions and it is only a matter of time before the truth is discovered. Old tensions have begun to show, tempers flare and alliances falter. To protect both their own futures and the humans of London they must catch the monster before either it strikes again or their existence becomes common knowledge. |
Either fakes or those truly blessed/cursed with the ability to contact the dead and foretell the future. Victorians of all classes were extremely interested in death and the spiritual world, allowing any mediums or fortune-tellers to capitalise fully on a willing market. These humans may also be involved with the underworld, with connections in the secret and alternate society of the undead. While technically illegal, the police hardly ever bother to arrest such people and even the new Queen is known to consult mediums and fortune tellers, making some celebrities of the age. |
Both male and female, witches are those who have harnessed (to varying degrees) the power of the supernatural, what might otherwise be termed magic. These influences might be from the 'old' magic of the British Isles themselves and the remnants of the druids, the magic of the Orient and opium, the power of Voodoo or alternatively the power of Egypt and the Pharaohs. There are of course many other influences and types of power that are drawn on in the dark alleys and cellars of the city, some more ghastly and frightening than the imagination dares believe. Witches may be those who choose to live in the human sphere, or those who have by some means extended their natural lives and prefer to live amongst the undead. |
Like the witches necromancers deal with magic but their powers are considerably more ‘evil’ by conventional London standards. Necromancers summon daemons to do their bidding or raise the dead. |
Of the Jekyll and Hyde and Frankenstein variety. Science and the supernatural can merge together to create things never before seen by the eyes of man or by the undead, new terrors of the night that must be hidden from human society to keep the peace. |
Some would term them Reinfelds. The servants and slaves of the undead, the unlucky ones, who dream perhaps of escape or the reward of eternal life for dedicated service. There are others of course, humans who have become the lovers of the undead, who have left the human world to be with their soul-mates but have no intention or desire yet to join their ranks. Perhaps they were lovers before one became a member of the undead society, and they stay with them hoping that one day they might find a cure. The other Associates are those from powerful families within the human upper-classes who know about the supernatural society that exists alongside their own, and are charged with keeping the secret and quashing rumours. |
Those who have stumbled across the secret society of the undead, either through accident or through having heard rumours and desired to know the truth. Others may also be those who were attacked by a member of society and have survived. Hunters and those who seek to find and destroy the undead are grouped here also. |
The ruling family, by the name of Fernsulfer, preside over the werewolf faction of society; issuing edicts to maintain power and control, and not beyond offering swift and violent judgement to those who threaten their authority. The majority of werewolves follow their rules, there are however those who do not, and the clan are constantly alert to repress such activity. The family is German in origin, but has lived in England the last few generations. There are several other werewolf families besides the Fernsulfers, with varying degrees of wealth and influence and individuals without family attachments, some of these families perhaps have designs on absorbing the leadership for themselves. |
Also lead by a head clan, the Rumianova, a family unit who keep tight control on their fellow vampires. Headed by Mariella, these are those men and women she and her companions have turned over the years. They are for the most part elegant, intelligent and see the werewolves as more bestial in comparison. Again, there are other vampires within the city, but for the most part they bow to the will of Lady Mariella least they suffer the consequences. |
Spirits of the undead who have not let completely let go of the life they used to lead. Invisible to most, they are able to bring havoc or dismay to those still alive. |
We are also currently accepting applications for demons and fae characters. Other undead species and character types are permitted on request on basis of strong application. |
