Remus Lupin watched Severus Snape walk down the corridor. He knew the other man was on patrol looking for students who were out after hours. The idea of spying on Snape amused Remus. This was a reversal of how things had been when they were students.

Hearing soft footsteps approaching from where Snape had disappeared made Remus press further back into the alcove.

"I knew you would be wandering the castle. Looking for a way to sneak your friend inside?" Snape glared at him.

"Actually, I was on my way to the cloister garden. Would you like to join me?" Remus gestured at a door that was a few feet away from them.

Snape gave him a tight nod of acceptance and followed Remus outside. He made a point of checking the entire area before joining Remus in the center of the small courtyard.

"I know we have a bad history. We could have a good future. I'm not here to let Sirius attack Harry. I am here as a favour to Dumbledore. I only wish to help protect Lily's boy." Remus knew better than to mention James. He hoped the use of Lily's name would help ease the tension in the other man.

Snape glared down his prodigious nose at Remus. "You and your friends tried to murder me. I see no reason why I should trust you."

"Sirius Black used me, just like he used you. Either we can work together or we can go our own ways. No matter what you decide, I am going to protect young Harry." Remus started to turn away. Taking a deep breath, he stepped closer to Snape, no Severus and kissed him.

"What did you do that for?" Severus spluttered and blinked in confusion.

"Because I've wanted to do that for years and regret I never once tried to snog you before Sirius drove a wedge between us." Remus turned his back and began to walk away. He silently counted each step.

"Wait a moment, Lupin," Severus hissed. "You do not get to do that to me and then walk away."

"What do you propose?" Remus faced him and waited to be hexed.

Severus stomped over to Remus and stopped when they were toe to toe. He reached out, tugged Remus closer and kissed him back.

"Where do we go from here," Remus asked.

"We start out slowly and see what develops," Severus replied.
