Severus blinked and then blinked again. He couldn't imagine where he could be. Then an astonishing thought hit him…the afterlife. His body snapped and popped as he stretched and his bladder felt heavy. Perhaps, not the afterlife but where then? The dove-gray walls, open window, diaphanous curtains, a jar of sea glass on the nightstand, it didn't make any sense. Finding the loo did.
He cautiously left the small bedroom; he couldn't locate his wand. The loo was immediately to the left and he made quick use of it. He checked his face in the mirror and he shrugged. It was much the same, his neck hadn't faired as well. He knew of a scar ointment that might help. With a shake of his head be brought himself back to the present.
First, he checked the other room adjacent to the loo. It stood empty with a neatly made up double bed, a night table and a wardrobe. There was more seaglass and the same lightweight curtains. Two steps farther and he was in a kitchen-cum-dining-area-cum- lounge. The same sheer curtains were in evidence here as well. A plate of croissants, butter, jam, and a teapot sat in the middle of the table with a single teacup. He could hear the sea.
The croissants and the teapot were warm to the touch, probably charmed. It seemed unlikely someone was out to poison him, even if this was all real. He poured himself a cuppa and spread butter and jam on his croissant and headed toward the light or perhaps simply the rear door.
A plain, white-washed covered porch wrapped around the house and overlooked the sea. The slightly warm breeze tickled his bare toes and blew up under the hem of his nightshirt. Remus Lupin occupied one of the chairs on the porch; he was scribbling something on parchment.
"What are you doing?" Severus asked, his voice catching from disuse.
"Living." Remus answered simply.
Severus stopped for a moment and then took a seat. With a sip of his tea, he crossed his ankles and gazed out over the blue-gray water. It was answer enough for now.
