Remus stormed after his friend, trying to catch up with him before he reached the portrait. But Sirius was fast, and Remus was so unfocused he forgot about the disappearing step and got caught there for several minutes before he was able to locate his wand and free himself.
When he entered the dormitory, Sirius was already in bed, probably feigning sleep. Remus wanted to drag him down to the common room and talk to him, but Sirius apparently didn't want to talk, and Remus really didn't want to wake up his other two room mates.
He crawled into his own bed, but looked over at Sirius to see if he could make contact.
Sirius didn't move, and Remus eventually had to give up. He rolled over, tucked the blanket tight around himself and closed his eyes.
What would he say to Sirius the next day? And would Sirius tell James and Peter about what he had seen? And what about Severus? Oh Merlin, Severus. Remus had ran away so sudden he hadn't had the chance to say anything to Severus. How had he reacted to the whole thing?
There was no way, however, to contact Severus without someone waking up, so Remus just had to take the chance that the Slytherin wasn't too cross with him and try to talk to him in the morning.
Morning came, and when Remus woke, Sirius had already gone down to breakfast. This was odd. Sirius was always the last one to get up and they often had to drag him out of bed so he wouldn't be late for classes.
When Remus came down to the Great Hall, Sirius immediately disappeared. Remus sighed. He had no idea what to say to him, but he knew he had to say something.
Remus grabbed some slices of toast and hurried out of the Great Hall. He had to find Sirius.
But Sirius clearly didn't want to be found. He came into the classroom after the lessons had started, picked a seat far from Remus, and was the first one to leave when it finished. In Potions class, Sirius came in, took one look at Severus and headed for the door.
Remus looked at Severus, and mouthed "I'm so sorry," but Severus simply shrugged and began studying his potions book. Remus tried to meet Severus' eyes during the whole lesson, and almost blew up his potion because he forgot to turn off the heat. Thankfully James noticed in time, or they both would have spent a week in the hospital wing.
"What is up with you and Sirius today?" James suddenly asked.
"What do you mean?" said Remus and flicked his wand at the cauldron to cool it down.
"Have you done anything to him?"
"No."
"Are you sure?" James looked directly at him. "He has been avoiding us all day, and Peter and I have done nothing to upset him, so that leaves you."
"I don't know what his problem is," Remus said, and it was sort of the truth. He really had no idea how Sirius felt about what had happened.
When James weren't looking, Remus scribbled a message on a piece of parchment to give to Severus on their way out of the classroom. They had developed a nice little system for this kind of communication, and thankfully for Remus, Severus did exactly as he used to.
They met yet again in the Charms classroom at midnight. The second Remus walked through the door, the door slammed shut behind him and locked itself.
"I knew you hadn't been careful," hissed Severus.
"I'm so sorry, I really didn't see him," Remus apologised.
"That's why you always triple check that you are not followed. I knew something like this would happen soon." Severus was pacing nervously.
"Relax, Severus," Remus said. "He hasn't said anything to anyone."
"How do you know?"
"Because he hasn't spoken to anyone all day. He just keeps disappearing."
"Where to?"
"How the hell should I know? He's avoiding me!"
"Then how do you know he hasn't said anything?"
"Who would he have told? Some random Hufflepuff? A teacher? I really don't see that happening."
"Maybe he told his brother."
"They're not speaking to each other, why would he go and tell him about this."
"I don't know," said Severus. "To ruin my life? That seems to be his life mission."
"That's harsh, Severus. I know you two don't get along, but he's not ruining your life."
"I'm not so sure that's true," said Severus and sat down on a desk.
"I'm sorry he saw us, Severus. But there's really nothing I can do to change that," Remus said and sat down next to him. "We knew we wouldn't be able to keep this a secret forever, now we just have to deal with it."
Remus put a comforting hand on Severus' thigh.
"I'm sorry I ran away last night," he said quietly. "I wanted to say proper good night, but I didn't know how to."
Remus leaned in for a kiss, but Severus jumped up and away from him.
"That little …"
Severus stormed to the door, but couldn't open it.
"Damn it!" he yelled and took out his wand. "Alohomora."
He ripped the door open and stormed out of the room. "Black, get back here you little prick!"
