They sat together, making the decrepit bench creak in misery. The ancient cemetery received no visitors, even at this time of year, and the dead slept undisturbed save for the lone hooting of an owl perched in a nearby tree.
“You’ve aged, friend.” Sirius’ voice was mild as he stared at Remus.
The other man smiled ruefully, his gaze knowing and going far deeper than the thin, haggard visage that always haunted his dreams. “You haven’t, Sirius.”
The wind spun a mournful tune, dead leaves caught up in a swirl of whispers and ghostly memories. Black leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees.
“The moon is safe.” He kept his gaze to the ground, missing the hopeful gleam in his companion’s eyes.
“The moon is never safe. Not for me.”
“It is tonight. Come back with me.” Sirius straightened and his eyes narrowed as he once again stared at Remus in the moon’s cool, threatening light. “Consider it for old time’s sake.”
The werewolf sighed and shook his head. “I don’t want the burden of more memories, Sirius. I want a future.”
“It can be that, Remus.” He rose, shadows flowing off his thin frame like gossamer spider’s webs.
