Halloween Gift for Shadowycat
Gift for: shadowycat
From: McKay/scribbulus_ink
Title: A Divinity That Shapes Our Ends
Pairing: Severus Snape/Minerva McGonagall
Rated: G
Notes: Based on a Scottish divination game played at Halloween.
At eighteen, Minerva was a bonny lass, fresh and fair, and everyone knew she would marry handsome Andrew McGinnis before she was twenty.
She did not.
At eighteen, Minerva peeled an apple on Halloween night, and she threw it over her shoulder as she stood in front of the hearth. Its shape on the floor formed an "S", and that night, she dreamed of a scowling man with hair as black as ink and eyes to match - a man who looked nothing like red-haired and befreckled Andrew.
And so Minerva refused all suitors and waited for her true love.
Her faith in Divination dwindled as years stretched into decades and she remained alone. She bristled when Albus hired Trelawney, who blinked owlishly and said, "Your wait is almost over" before they'd even been introduced.
Then Severus Snape grew up and returned to Hogwarts, all scowls and bitterness, with hair as black as ink and eyes to match, and Minerva knew the apple peel had been right all along.
Severus never understood why she murmured, "You've kept me waiting far too long, you stupid man," against his lips just before she kissed him, but he supposed it didn't really matter.
