With his nightly duty of patrolling the hallways completed, Severus Snape decided a trip to the kitchen was in order. He would treat himself to a cup of tea and perhaps, if any was left over from dinner, a slice of chocolate cake.
When he was at the door he smelled it. Caramel. Presuming students were raiding the pantries, he burst through the door.
“Miss Granger,” he shouted, “what are you doing?”
Hermione looked up from her work. “Good evening professor. I’m making caramel apples for the students. A nice treat at Halloween, I think.”
Snape walked toward the table to inspect the delights. Hermione pulled one from the kettle and twirled it. Looking at him slyly, she offered it to him.
Snape raised an eyebrow. “Are you tempting me, Miss Granger? Is there not a Muggle legend about a woman who tempts a man with an apple?”
“There is.”
“I am in danger then,” he said as neared her.
“Perhaps. Only there is no snake to put me up to such a deed.”
“Don’t be so sure of that,” he purred as he took the apple from her. “At least about the snake and what it is up to.”
