It was always my favourite time of year. Colder in bygone days of course, but there remains that crispness in the air, the clean scent of winter around the corner mingling with the soft decay of fallen leaves. Back then, the evenings drew in fast, untainted by streetlights. In the more resolutely Muggle areas, the darkness was absolute. My family were Wizards but they celebrated the way their non-magical brethren did, with fire, food and song: a talisman against encroaching cold, a gesture of thanks for the harvest, a voice raised in the dark.
Now I cannot feel the cold or taste the food. My family’s tradition was broken, replaced by anger and sorrow. The date of my demise was terribly ironic. Many only see their departed on this night but mine saw me all of the time. They are all gone now, and it took me centuries to find a new tradition. I learned to accept my state, even to embrace it. I may have become a figure of ridicule but that, perhaps, is a gift. My new tradition, for my new family, comes from my ability to mock myself. After all, laughter is another voice in the darkness.
