He apparated to an old cottage, the echoes of a battle still haunting his head. Vertigo and exhaustion had him stumbling to the floor, and he didn't even flinch when he heard footsteps on the wooden floor, and a soft voice whispering:
"Legillimens."
For the first time in his life, Severus let his defences down.
Determination. An unbreakable vow. A promise to guard one's life.
Despair. A tower. Two legillimens minds clashing. A demand: "End my suffering, Severus. Please." A refusal: "The Order cannot lose you!" A decision.
Hate. A hate so strong he saw red, although it could just have been Greyback's blood on his hands.
Longing. Faded pictures of a brown-haired teenager, smiling warmly while clutching a book to his chest.
When he came to his senses, Lupin was kneeling in front of him, brushing his thumbs softly across his face.
"I never wanted to believe …" he whispered, expression sorrowful. "I tried not to, but the evidence…"
Severus chuckled weakly. "You always had trouble seeing the obvious, Lupin."
Lupin looked pained. "I lost Sirius because I didn't believe him… I can't lose you, too."
A strong embrace stopped his blabbering. "You never did, Remus. You never did."
