The last pointed hat and scary mask were patted into place, the last sheet was flung over the last head, the last basket was handed out, and the last child, and accompanying parent, was out the door.

The door clicked shut.

"Why did we agree to this?"

"They're family!"

"They're not my sodding family."

"Severus. Harry and Ron are effectively my brothers. Katie and Padma are their perfectly lovely wives. That makes them my family, hence yours."

"And why have we agreed to remain here? This is Potter's home, Hermione."

"Well. As they've got Calliope and Hector out with them, it seemed only fair that we remain behind and hand out the treats--"

"I abhor handing out treats. Children do not need treats."

"Severus? I wasn't finished speaking."

"Go on, then."

"Yes, and you see, evidently there's something of a legend about this house, rebuilt or not. It's looked upon much the way the residents of Hogsmeade looked on the Shrieking Shack."

"I fail to see what that has to do--"

"Severus. The kids are gone. No one will trick-or-treat here. And we are completely alone. With costumes."

"…Oh."

"I thought I should be the wench. Unless you'd rather."
