He only had one chance. All Hallow’s Eve was the one night when the veil between the worlds lifted.
His one chance to see him again.
“Don’t bring him back,” a voice said behind him.
Remus stared at the ticking clock. Soon the hand would strike twelve. He had to cast at that exact moment… One minute now.
“Did you hear me?”
“Go away, Snape.”
Footsteps came closer, the voice quieter. “It’s Snape now, is it? Now that you almost have your Sirius back, it’s Snape again?” He said Sirius like it tasted sour.
Remus twirled his wand, concentrating. Thirty seconds.
Snape pressed against Remus’ back and gripped his arms. “Remus…”
The familiar scent made Remus lightheaded and for a moment he almost took his eyes off the clock.
“I’ll say it if I have to.” Snape’s breath was hot against his neck. Remus closed his eyes, letting the throbbing of his own heart overtake him. Snape would never say it.
The clock ticked.
“I love you.”
If Snape hadn’t spoken right into Remus’ ear, he might never have heard it. He spun around and kissed Snape desperately.
When he opened his eyes again, it was past twelve.
