There was only absence. Not only of light, though his wand was the only source of it in the bowels of the castle, but of presence. He had thought that there would be something – a feeling of power; the throbbing, perhaps, of the heart of the wards – but there was only the chill staleness of dungeon air and shadows that flickered at the edge of his vision.
The tombs of the Founders were said to hold more than just bodies, and the wandlight that crawled over the runes on their sarcophagi seemed to confirm it, because tucked between the stone effigies of grimacing lions and gaping eagles were symbols that spoke of a power that Tom couldn’t feel, and of secrets. Hufflepuff, buried behind walls of twisted badgers, had decorated her tomb with runes of family, ensuring with her death that every student felt loved.
He reached out to touch the tomb of his ancestor. Unlike the others, it was open, and in it lay a shadow that his lumos couldn’t penetrate. He curled his fingers around the edge and peered into the darkness at a space he knew would suit him perfectly, and felt runes of longevity dig like fangs into his palms. Here was Hogwarts’ weakness.
