I had hoped from the early promise shewn in your classroom that you would be as effective with the governance of Gryffindor House. I am sadly disappointed.

Fifty-three, Professor. Fifty-three students including one child hied from her bed and spirited off the premises without your knowledge. Aurors were called, only to discover the girl at home. Doubtless her Muggle parents do not understand the gravity of her offence or the damage it does to her future career. However, fifty-two others are not an isolated mistake nor an accidental oversight despite whatever poor judgment it demonstrates.

Observe your children more closely, Professor, and give ample warning in the future of such ill-judged and injurious activities such as this absurd withdrawal from Hogwarts by these very foolish parents of these very troublesome children.

I have received your note, and I must say that I understand your concern. You are quite right: I should have contacted you earlier regarding this matter, once I saw how things were tending in my House. I can only excuse myself (and I realize that it is no excuse) by saying that I had hoped that upon reflection that some of the children---or their parents---would realize what a grave mistake they'd made, and would return their children to Hogwarts before their coursework was compromised entirely for the term.

I have to confess that it's been very uphill work winning the confidence of the children in this House.
