I'm sorry this is so late. I meant to email you both yesterday after I got the information from the rental company, but with the Quidditch game this weekend I've been having to work at the Q in the evenings as well. They sent a list of five different place settings that I can choose from for the reception, but I couldn't decide. I did get it down to two and after the... not disaster, but misunderstanding at the cake tasting with Bill on Saturday, I don't think I should ask him his opinion on decorations for the reception since he'll just point at one at random and that really isn't what I'm looking for...

But, yes, plates. The flatware and the crystal and everything was much easier to decide on. Though I am still trying to pick between square tables or round, but I did manage to get the necessary number of tables and chairs reserved, shape is just a swish of a wand, of course.

As for the cakes... The baker was very nice, and we did decide on the traditional fruitcake and a chocolate with strawberries and cream filling, but as for the design, I'm not sure either. I was thinking about merging some of the features he pointed out. I like the uneven layers of the first, but I was thinking since it's early spring that perhaps the colors should be brighter, and I'm not sure about the spun sugar nest on top, but he said that the illusionary doves that rest in it are a "big hit" with a lot of brides. The butterflies and dragonflies are made out of sugar or fondant and will move, of course. And in the last one, the vines will grow and the flowers will bloom throughout the reception until it's time to cut the cake.

Excellent choice with Bill, dear; you're getting the hang of managing a man quite well. As to the plates, I would go with the first - simple and elegant. You don't want the plates to attract attention away from more important things, such as the bride and the cake.

For the cake... let me think... None of those quite work for me, so I would agree with your idea of combining ideas. I do like the whimsy in the uneven layers. We could also have the layers set off at an angle, as in my first photo. While the flowers are traditional, there are certainly other options to consider. Fondant fruit (or real fruit, for that matter) could certainly be a nice alternative, or perhaps some attractive runes similar to the third photo. If you do opt for flowers, dear, make sure that you get a scent charm on them as they grow, so as to add additional ambiance to the tent.
